Flamingo

In de schaduw van Delhi’s oprukkende metropool worstelt een onverwachte stadsbewoner om te overleven: de flamingo. Volgens promovendus Amit Kumar zien inwoners deze gracieuze vogel ten onrechte als een tijdelijke gast. Maar de flamingo is géén voorbijtrekkende bezoeker – dit is zijn thuis. Terwijl beton en rook het landschap overnemen, probeert Dr. Kumar zichtbaar te maken hoe deze kwetsbare soort letterlijk stikt onder de druk van industrialisatie en klimaatverandering. Genegeerd als inheems dier, en niet beschermd als zeldzaam ecosysteemlid, staat het voortbestaan van de flamingo meer dan ooit op het spel… Deze film wordt samen met Patagonia in één blok vertoond.

Amit Kumar, a PhD scholar, has one pet peeve: the humans of the National Capital Region of Delhi are completely ignorant to the existence of a year-round bird neighbor: the Greater Flamingo. As Delhi and its satellite cities and suburbs hurtle towards almost-apocalyptic levels of urbanization – usurped, encroached lands and smokey, blustering air – Dr. Kumar feels an added urgency to illustrate to locals how the Greater Flamingo isn’t a migratory guest, who could easily alter routes and stopover elsewhere in cleaner, greener pastures, but one of their own, a fragile species who is choking under the weight of hyper-industrialization and climate change. This is their home too, and being neither recognized as native, nor protected as part of region’s once-ample flora and fauna, the threat to the flamingo has never been greater. This film will be shown alongside Patagonia in a single screening.
