Kinderen grootbrengen is een uitdaging. Of we het nu hebben over de vrouwtjes octopus in de Stille Oceaan die op zoek is naar een veilige plek om haar eieren te leggen, of over de moeder orang-oetan die haar kind hoog in het regenwoud van Borneo leert hoe het eraan toe gaat in de jungle.
Sommige families zijn hecht, zoals kuddes vrouwelijke olifanten die door het droge land van Namibië zwerven.
Maar, of het nu alleenstaande moeders en vaders, koppels van hetzelfde geslacht of hele kolonies zussen zijn – allemaal werken ze hard om het voortbestaan van hun nakomelingen te verzekeren.
De fauna van onze planeet is mooi en veelzijdig, net als alle manieren waarop dieren worden opgevoed.
Childcare is a challenge, whether in the Pacific Ocean like a female octopus looking for a safe place to lay its eggs. Or high up in the Bornean rainforest, where mother orangutan teaches her kid the ways of the jungle.
Some families are tight knit, like the matriarchal herds of female elephants roaming the dry lands of Namibia. Single mothers and fathers, same sex couples and whole colonies of sisters – all working hard to ensure their offspring’s survival.
Our planet’s fauna is beautiful and multifaceted, as are the ways of animal parenting.
